This sermon was delivered on the Ninth Day of Dhul-Hijjah, 10 A.H. (632 CE) in the ‘Uranah valley of Mount Arafat in Makkah. It was the occasion of the annual rites of Hajj (the pilgrimage). It is also known as the Farewell Pilgrimage.
After praising, and thanking Allah (The One True God) the Prophet began with the words:
“O People! lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore, listen carefully to what I am saying and Take These Words to Those Who Could Not Be Present Here Today.“O People! just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that he will indeed reckon your deeds.
“Allah has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligations shall henceforth be waived. Your capital is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. Allah has Judged that there shall be no interest and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib (Prophet’s uncle) be waived.
“Every right arising out of homicide in pre-Islamic days is henceforth waived and the first such right that I waive is that arising from the murder of Rabiah ibn al-Harithiah.
“O Men! the unbelievers indulge in tampering with the calender in order to make permissible that which Allah forbade, and to prohibit which Allah has made permissible. With Allah the months are twelve in number. Four of them are holy, three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumada and Shaban.
“Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope of that he will be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.
“O People! it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah’s trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.
“O People! listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily prayers, fast during month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat (obligatory charity). Perform Hajj if you can afford to.
“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly.
“Do not therefore do injustice to yourselves. Remember one day you will meet Allah and answer your deeds. So beware, do not astray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.
“O People! No Prophet or Apostle Will Come after Me and No New Faith Will Be Born. Reason well, therefore, O People! and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QUR’AN and my SUNNAH (i.e., sayings, deeds, and approvals) and if you follow these you will never go astray.
“All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly.
“Be my witness O Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people.”
As part of this sermon, the Prophet recited them a Revelation from Allah which he had just received and which completed the Qur’an, for it was the last passage to be revealed:
This day the disbelievers despair of prevailing against your religion, so fear them not, but fear Me (Allah)! This day have I perfected for you your religion and fulfilled My favor unto you, and it hath been My good pleasure to choose Islam for you as your religion (Surah 5, Ayah 3).
The sermon was repeated sentence by sentence by Safwan’s brother Rabiah (RA), who had a powerful voice, at the request of the Prophet and he faithfully proclaimed to over ten thousand gathered on the occasion. Toward the end of his sermon, the Prophet asked “O people, have I faithfully delivered unto you my message?” A powerful murmur of assent “O Allah, yes!”, arose from thousands of pilgrims and the vibrant words “Allahumma na’m” rolled like thunder throughout the valley. The Prophet raised his forefinger and said: “Be my witness O Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people.”

Allah: Allah is the proper name in Arabic for The One and Only God, The Creator and Sustainer of the universe. It is used by the Arab Christians and Jews for the God (Eloh-im in Hebrew; ‘Allaha’ in Aramaic, the mother tongue of Jesus). The word Allah does not have a plural or gender. Allah does not have any associate or partner, and He does not beget nor was He begotten. SWT is an abbreviation of Arabic words that mean ‘Glory Be To Him.’
pbuh: Peace Be Upon Him. This expression is used for all Prophets of Allah. (Twenty Five Prophets are mentioned in Quran by Allah, some of them are: Muhammad (pbuh), Jesus (pbuh), David (pbuh), Moses (pbuh), Abraham (pbuh), Solomon (pbuh), Ishmael (pbuh), Isaac (pbuh), Jacob (pbuh), Job (pbuh), Jonah (pbuh) and more (pbut)

This sermon is not part of Islam. Its a phony translation using modern western language that is not in the original:
http://www.faithfreedom.org/2009/08/18/a-phony-last-sermon-of-muhammad-and-the-fraud-of-progressive-islam/
The Holy Bible that you read (if you do) is also in modern English. Shall we call it a 'phony translation'? If translations are phony, as you say, then why don't you learn the Hebrew to read the Bible in the original, and learn Arabic to read the Last Sermon in the original? The Last Sermon is a code of conduct for all Muslims, and its principles were copied by the architects of the American Constitution and Declaration of Indepenence.
Yes Brother, you are right. Its known to all now that most of the developed societies got the basic principles of humanity and equality from Islam and especially from the charter of humanity (Muhammad's (PBUH) last sermon). The need today is that we, Muslims, should start struggling by combining our hands toward recognition and adoption of our principles defined by Muhammad Sallallaho alaehe wasallam.
The Shia school of thought says that Muhammad(saw), in the last sermon, said that He(saw) is leaving two things for us: The Holy Qu’raan and Ahlul-Bayt but I have never come across these words anywhere so far. I am simply looking for the truth. I have always seen “The Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah”
Hi, I'm glad you are interested in learning the differences instead of Hating what you don't understand. According to All Muslims, Sunni and Shia, we are obligated to follow the Sunna, which is the saying and ways of the Prophet. And All Muslims, Sunni and Shia, are obligated to follow the Quran, the Words of God. During the Prophet's last sermon, he gathered thousands of people to the middle of the desert, under the blazing hot sun, to tell them that you must follow what is obligatory to you which is my ways, saying, Quran, but he also said that my message will be nulified if I don't convey this last sermon. Well, if this last sermon is the same message as all the messages he has given, then what is the real importance of His Last Sermon. God knows that if there is no one to lead Islam after the Prophet leaves that this great spread of power will be split into many sects and extinguishing itself. So, God told the Prophet that you must leave the people with a leader. The Prophet says that I am leaving you with two heavy things, the Quran, and my Family.
Now some would say, why would the Prophet pick his family to lead Islam, maybe for power reasons, right…wrong, the reason why he left his Family to lead is because the Prophet, and the Prophets before him came from the same pure bloodline. Instead of the people leading Islam to gain worldly achievments, the Prophet's Family would lead Islam thru their purity, as the purity of the Prophet. Another thing, some Muslims hate the Prophet's family and some have killed his family, including Ali, and his sons, Hassan and Hussain and Abbas. If I were to ask a non muslim to kill the grandson of Jesus Christ, would they do it? Absolutly not. There is no split between Sunni and Shia, we are all one religion, we are all brothers and sisters, and sons of Adam and Eve. Just remember that Jesus will return to earth to bring peace and justice where there is war and hatred.
Just remember that Muslims, Jews, and Christians are all servents of God, but people are always trying to change history to achieve personal gains, as people have changed the sunnas of the Prophet to acheive their aims. True Muslims unit under one name…ISLAM and understand that the people of the Book (Muslims, Christians, and Jews) follow the same religion execpt they must fight harder to find the truth because people have taken over after Jesus left and changed his books to benefit themselves.
I found this site that might help: http://www.al-islam.org/encyclopedia/chapter1a/1….
it lists all the Sunni references that lead to the fact that Sunnis and Shias both follow the Sunna of the Prophet, but one must love and follow the Prophet's Family in order to understand the Quran and the Sunnas of the Prophet.
Prophet Mohammad left behind him the Quran and Sunnah. (the words of ALLAH and the words of Prophet Mohammad Sala ALLAHu Alayhi Wa Salam)
O Muhammad PBUH, we bear witness that you have conveyed the messages of Allah almighty.
Allahu Akbar! indeed true salvation lies with the adherence to the injunctions of the Holy Qur’an and the teachings of our Great Prophet Muhammad PBUH. May the Owner of my soul, your soul and the souls of all things, continue to protect and guide us unto the straight path of Islam, ameen.
“O People! No Prophet or Apostle Will Come after Me and No New Faith Will Be Born. Reason well, therefore, O People! and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the QUR’AN and my SUNNAH (i.e., sayings, deeds, and approvals) and if you follow these you will never go astray.
i love this i am only a muslim and love islam

Dear Mazhar,
Thanks for your guidance and it is corrected as you said.
Forgiveness is the basic element for sustaining peace and harmonies in the social systemThe Prophet (PBUH) has shown exemplary behavior and pardon the murder of Rabiah bin Haris. He always preaches the teaching of forgiveness.
